Social networking site Twitter has failed in its initial attempts to trademark the word "tweet,"

As it turns out, Twitter had applied for a trademark claim for "Tweet", the popular term for the 140 character updates that Twitter is famous for.

And to everyone's surprise, the claim was preliminarily rejected by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. As for the reasons for the rejection, the Patent Office felt that several existing applications already use the phrase "Tweet" as a prefix for their various Twitter offerings - TweetDeck, TweetPhoto and the likes.

If that was not all, some of these companies had already applied for such a trademark claim before Twitter itself did. Acting too late, Twitter?

As for Twitter, the co-founder Biz Stone had earlier made a blog post when they had first applied for the trademark claim.

He said, "We have applied to trademark Tweet because it is clearly attached to Twitter from a brand perspective but we have no intention of 'going after' the wonderful applications and services that use the word in their name when associated with Twitter,"

If that wasn't clear enough, he added the following, "In fact, we encourage the use of the word Tweet. However, if we come across a confusing or damaging project, the recourse to act responsibly to protect both users and our brand is important."

As of now, we do not have any information if Twitter has any intentions to take this up with a higher authority.

Symantec is warning about a mass-mailing worm that comes in an attachment pretending to be a Twitter invite.

Symantec is warning about a mass-mailing worm that comes in an attachment pretending to be a Twitter invite.

"The observed messages appear as if they have been sent from a Twitter account; however, unlike a legitimate Twitter message, there is no invitation URL present in the body," a Symantec blog post says. "Instead, the user will see an attachment that appears as a .zip file that purportedly contains an invitation card."

The name of the attachment is "Invitation Card.zip" and Symantec identified it as W32.Ackantta.B@mm, a worm targeting Windows computers that was discovered in an e-card virus attack in February, according to Symantec. The worm gathers e-mail addresses from compromised PCs and spreads by copying itself to removable drives and shared folders.

Ten Twitter crimes get you unfollowed

Social networking sites seem to have a lifespan of about two years before the next-big-thing arrives to steal the limelight.

The MySpace craze died out in the UK way back in 2005, and by 2007 Facebook had become the biggest social networking site of all time, ever.

Now, though, all the talk is about Twitter. And even though it was secretly growing in popularity long before the likes of Philip Schofield starting waffling about it on telly, it's now taking over from Facebook as the most-talked about community platform.

The problem is that as people migrate across the Twitter, they bring their bad e-habits with them. And with every individual seemingly interpreting Twitter's usefulness in entirely different ways, people are inevitably starting to annoy each other.

To avoid being unfollowed en-masse, you'd be wise to follow these simple rules:

1. Don't use your Twitter account as an RSS feed

How can we put this politely? For the love of God, Twitter is not an RSS reader! It's intensely irritating when you follow a website, corporate account or individual expecting some interesting content, only to get spammed to hell and back with dozens of links that haven't even been vetted for the Twitter audience. If you're going to link out, choose wisely, do it in context and don't spew links all day long, please!

2. Avoid Twitter diarrhoea

If you update your twitter feed every 10 seconds all day every day, you'll get unfollowed so fast you won't even have time to tweet about it. It doesn't matter how important, funny or awesome you think you are, no one is interesting enough to spam my feed with updates like "Am sitting on the toilet and contemplating the day ahead". Go muse about your bowel movements somewhere more appropriate – like MySpace, perhaps.

3. Stop re-tweeting yourself

It sounds ridiculous, but it seems to happen all the time. People tweet something that they think is particularly clever or funny (it's usually nothing of the sort), and when no one seems to notice or RT them, they repeat the tweet two hours later. Please consider that you're probably not as funny as you think you are, and try harder next time.

4. Don't spam Facebook with Twitter updates

TweetDeck and the like are fantastic little apps, but integrating the Facebook status update was a monumentally bad idea. People are already abandoning Facebook like rats from the Titanic – but when we do go back there we don't want to see hundreds of status updates that were intended for Twitter. Sorry, but spamming both feeds with the same stuff is lazy, annoying and just plain infuriating.

5. Stop the bragging

It doesn't matter how kind and tolerant you are, you have to admit it – the one thing you really can't stand is a smart arse. So when people brag, boast and crow about how great they are and what a fun time they're having all the time, it just makes people think they're an annoying idiot. If you win ten quid on the lottery, please do tell your Twitter followers – but it's not necessary to twitter about it all bloody day, nor is it a pre-requisite for you to post 20 twitpics of the winning ticket to prove you're telling the truth, and then list the 18 things you might spend your winnings on.

6. Don't reply to celebrity twitterers

Following an interesting celebrity is all well and good – some of them really do offer up some cool comments. However, replying to something a celeb with thousands of followers has said smacks of stupidity. It makes you look like a brown-nosing fool, and your followers will see you as such.

7. Don't use Twitter like a chat window

If you're going to have a 16-tweet conversation with someone, please either get a room or take your chat somewhere more appropriate like Windows Live Messenger. This kind of thing only shows up on people's feeds if they're following both parties – still though, more than two @replies each counts as SPAM in our book.

8. Stop the shameless follower chasing

It seems it doesn't matter how different all the social media sites are, they have one key thing in common: the people using them are obsessed with getting as many friends/followers as possible. On Twitter, people tend to follow people/accounts who they think will follow them back, just to boost the numbers. It's vanity in the extreme, don't do it.

9. Don't ask people to RT your tweets

If people liked what you said, they might choose to re-tweet it. If they didn't like it, they definitely won't – unless what you said was so ridiculously stupid that they're repeating it in order to ridicule you. Admittedly, in some cases asking for RTs is ok, but on the whole it makes you look desperate.

10. Stop the in-jokes

Twittering in-jokes that only one other person is likely to 'get' – doesn't make you look cool. It makes you look like a berk. Fact.

Get a ReTweet Button for Your Blog

Where did you get the ‘ReTweet’ button for your blog?’

The answer is that it is from the team at Tweetmeme (a service that tracks hot stories on Twitter). You can get the code for this button here.

How to Retweet: A Guide for Newbie to Twitter.com

Many bloggers use Twitter as a platform to promote their own blog. That’s an easy concept, no need to waste our time there. Instead, lets focus on something that is under-utilized by most bloggers: promoting other blogger’s content by “retweeting.”

The art of “retweeting” is best described as taking a twitter message someone else has posted, and rebroadcasting that same message to your followers. When broadcasting this message, you should give credit to the original poster. While retweeting sounds great for the original tweeter (since there is usually a link involved), retweeting can actually benefit you just as much if not more.

How to Properly Retweet

Before we get into the greatness of retweeting, it would probably be a good idea for you to understand how to properly retweet.

The common syntax starts off with the use of a label. My favorite label to use is “Retweet:” - the label “Retweeting:” and “Reading:” work as well.

Next comes the crediting. You can credit the original poster by simply using the @reply syntax, for example: “@originalPoster”.

Lastly, you should add the link along with a quick note about the link and why it is relevant. Here is a full example of retweeting:

Retweet: @originalPoster The 5 Best Blog Tips http://is.gd/56f - great tips

Now that you understand how to properly retweet, lets move on to some basic concepts of retweeting.

Only Retweet Content You Find Truly Interesting and Relevant

The natural instinct many of you will have is that if you retweet another individual’s content, then there is a better chance that the original poster will retweet your content in the future. While this holds true (and I will cover that in a minute), you should not simply retweet everyone’s content for your own personal gain. You must be selective when you retweet since the whole point of this practice is to benefit your followers.

Retweeting Provides Value to Your Follower

There is a reason why people follow you, value. If you can provide value to your follower you will not only make that individual happy, but you will most likely attract more followers. Providing quality content is always a great way to provide your followers with value. The first thing that comes to mind is writing up a great blog post, and linking the post in a tweet. While this is one way to approach this concept, it is not the only way. Another way to provide your followers with great content is to link to other relevant and interesting content.

Retweeting Will Benefit Your Personal Brand

Retweeting will most likely build your personal brand as well as your follower’s loyalty. If you point a reader to an external source that is truly relevant and beneficial to them, the amount of trust that individual has in you will increase. The next time you post a link, whether it be to your blog or to another source, the chances of that individual clicking that link are higher than before.

Retweeting Will Help You Build Relationships With The Original Posters

As mentioned previously, the likelihood of being on the other end of a retweet increases as you retweet. Retweeting someone else’s content is an act of kindness, and for the most part bloggers like to return such acts. This isn’t to say that you should expect someone to retweet your content just because you retweet theirs. Again, retweeting is all about providing value to your followers, and an individual isn’t going to retweet a post of yours if it is not top notch.

A Concern: Doesn’t Retweeting Steer My Followers Away From Me?

Actually no. In my opinion retweeting will never lose you a follower or reader (unless you send them to some sort of spam, or even worse you RickRoll them!). Why would someone stop reading your blog or following your twitter because you sent them off to another website? Keep an open mind when it comes to your readers, they are usually smart and good people.

Conclusion

Retweeting is a great way to add quality and value to your Twitter. If used incorrectly retweeting can actually hurt your personal brand and future traffic. If done right, retweeting can help you educate your followers, build your personal brand, increase future traffic, and connect you to other bloggers / content creators in your niche.

Newest Twitter Worm "Best Video" Is Spreading

If you're a Twitter user who innocently clicked on a link in a tweet saying "Best Video" this weekend, you could be in for an account suspension after it emerged the micro blogging service has been hit by yet another worm attack.

The rogue tweet links to http://juste.ru, which delivers not a video, but a piece of code that appears to be designed to hijack accounts and steal passwords.

Accounts locked down

Twitter has responded by issuing a warning to avoid the tweet or anything involving the URL, saying: "No matter how good that 'best video' looks, don't go to any juste.ru domains. We're aware of the situation and are working on it".

To that end, it has locked down some affected accounts to squash the worm, reporting that they "should be cleaned and restored soon".

The Fine Art Of Balancing Your Twitter Conversations

by James Mallinson

Now that Twitter has several million active users, it’s no surprise to see such a variety of people discussing a wide range of topics. But while the content of all those tweets may be so different, they ultimately fall roughly into five categories.

Now, before you all go off and close your browsers, saying you’ve read it all before, consider the following. All the most popular people on Twitter (excluding celebrities who largely get by due to their fame) are very effective at balancing these five categories to create an interesting and engaging conversation with their followers. They’re not all about retweets or replies and they don’t just talk about their personal life all the time.

I’ll go more into this later in this post, but firstly let’s look at what exactly those five categories are.

Retweets

Twitter can feel like thousands of people all talking at the same time. There are things you can do to tame it but even so, interesting tweets can all too easily slip past people. Banks are trying social networking, jump on Twitter wagon

Social networking is becoming an increasingly popular way for banks to reach consumers amid the economic downturn.

Wells Fargo and Bank of America have begun to "tweet" — post messages of 140 characters or less on Twitter.com — with customers about everything from bank fees to product features. Discover Financial , American Express and Citigroup have launched Facebook or MySpace pages. Some banks even put marketing videos on YouTube.

"Social media is a whole new world, and you cannot afford to not be a part of it," says Pamela Blase, a spokeswoman for UMB Financial of Kansas City, Mo., which tweets about everything from the bank's financial stability to the industry's prospects.

Banks say they're establishing presences on social-networking sites to tap into a growing demographic and to control the conversation about their brands. Yet the economic turmoil, some say, makes it even more important to reach out to customers any way they can.

"There's a lot of worry out there," says Ed Terpening, vice president of social media at Wells Fargo, one of the first banks with a group of employees dedicated to social networking. "That means that we have to stay close to our customers."

vnunet.com, 10 May 2009

At a US press event this week Google said it has been considering making real-time updates to its search offering.

Search executive Marissa Mayer said she was thinking of adding micro-blogging messaging to search to bring more value to end users. She said web users are interested in seeing what's happening in real-time and this has been demonstrated by Twitter's success.

"We are interested in being able to offer, for example, micro-blogging and micro-messaging in our search," said Mayer, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"Particularly in Blog Search and possibly in Web Search, but we don't have any particular plans to announce," she added.
