Tweetshrink - Tweetshrink is a service aimed at Twitter users, helping shave those few extra letters for shorter representations

Why Do We Need Tweetshrink?

Tweetshrink tries its very best to fit your text within the harsh constraints of a tweet by replacing common phrases and words with shorter representations. Kind of like running your new text through the dryer or sending it to fat camp.

Tweetshrink is a service aimed at Twitter users, helping shave those few extra letters off a tweet that has exceeded the 140 character maximum. The goal was really to help users who clip that max allowance without having to actively edit their tweet or changing the meaning or basic readability of the original message.

Although Tweetshrink is available via the web at http://tweetshrink.com, and tweets can be posted directly from the web interface, Tweetshrink’s most useful feature is its availability via the Tweetshrink API. Other applications can send tweets/text messages to the Tweetshrink API and have it “shrinked” for them.

The original application which utilized the Tweetshrink API is the extremely popular TweetDeck, an Adobe AIR desktop application which greatly enhances the functionality of Twitter. This use makes it very easy to have your text messages “shrinked”.

It is important to note that the point of Tweetshrink is not to turn your tweets into "leet speak", or "cell phone text message lingo", or some other such shorthand. The main point is to shorten your tweets without personal editing. It is also not for use with every tweet, just the ones that are too long. Tweetshrink encourages responsible shrinking!

Shrinking tweets is neither an art nor a science. Just a guesstimation which can be tweaked, poked, and prodded. Sometimes the results are helpful, sometimes they are laughable. But what’s important is that we try. Hopefully the result is enjoyable, usable, and fun.
