Google does not use the keywords meta tag in web ranking (Google Video) - At least for Google's web search results (Sep,2009).

Matt Cutts, Search Quality Team in his blog post on 21st September 2009 says that Recently we received some questions about how Google uses (or more accurately, doesn't use) the "keywords" meta tag in ranking web search results. Suppose you have two website owners, Alice and Bob. Alice runs a company called AliceCo and Bob runs BobCo. One day while looking at Bob's site, Alice notices that Bob has copied some of the words that she uses in her "keywords" meta tag. Even more interesting, Bob has added the words "AliceCo" to his "keywords" meta tag. Should Alice be concerned?

At least for Google's web search results currently (September 2009), the answer is no. Google doesn't use the "keywords" meta tag in our web search ranking. This video explains more, or see the questions below.

Q: Does Google ever use the "keywords" meta tag in its web search ranking?
A: In a word, no. Google does sell a Google Search Appliance, and that product has the ability to match meta tags, which could include the keywords meta tag. But that's an enterprise search appliance that is completely separate from our main web search. Our web search (the well-known search at Google.com that hundreds of millions of people use each day) disregards keyword metatags completely. They simply don't have any effect in our search ranking at present.

Q: Why doesn't Google use the keywords meta tag?
A: About a decade ago, search engines judged pages only on the content of web pages, not any so-called "off-page" factors such as the links pointing to a web page. In those days, keyword meta tags quickly became an area where someone could stuff often-irrelevant keywords without typical visitors ever seeing those keywords. Because the keywords meta tag was so often abused, many years ago Google began disregarding the keywords meta tag.

Q: Does this mean that Google ignores all meta tags?
A: No, Google does support several other meta tags. This meta tags page documents more info on several meta tags that we do use. For example, we do sometimes use the "description" meta tag as the text for our search results snippets, as this screenshot shows:

Even though we sometimes use the description meta tag for the snippets we show, we still don't use the description meta tag in our ranking.

Q: Does this mean that Google will always ignore the keywords meta tag?
A: It's possible that Google could use this information in the future, but it's unlikely. Google has ignored the keywords meta tag for years and currently we see no need to change that policy.

On February 26, 2009, Google software engineer Matt Cutts collected questions on Google Moderator and answered many of them on video.

Vince Samios from the United Kingdom asked:

Do you feel that the widespread and blanket use of nofollow tags is devaluing Google's search algorithms? Examples such as Wikipedia, where ALL external links are nofollow. Does Wikipedia mean nothing to Google's algorithms?

jonaths from Brighton, UK asked:

Do Google take into account quality factors from nofollowed links when the links come from well established authority websites, such as Wikipedia?

Picasa Web Albums: Introducing name tags - The name tags feature in Picasa Web Albums helps you automatically organize and share your photos.

The name tags feature in Picasa Web Albums helps you automatically organize and share your photos based on who's in them. Learn more at http://picasaweb.google.com, or visit our blog at http://googlephotos.blogspot.com.

Mike Horowitz, Product Manager in his blog post said that..

Today, we're pleased to announce the public beta of Picasa 3.0, the next generation of Google's photo management software. We're also launching a redesigned Picasa Web Albums with a brand-new 'name tags' feature, which gives you the power to quickly label and organize your photos based on who's in each picture.

From the start, Picasa's goal has been to help people get more from their digital cameras. Earlier versions of Picasa focused on supporting users at every critical juncture in the digital photo lifecycle -- making it easy to import, organize, edit, print, and (since the advent of Picasa Web Albums) publish your photos online. Unlike piecemeal alternatives, Picasa manages all these things inside a single application, and with a consistent, easy-to-use interface.

Fast-forward to today, and a few things have changed. Sharing online has skyrocketed in importance, as more of us develop a network of friends and family who are tuning into our pictures. Online availability also matters more as we start to use our phones, TVs, and wifi frames to deliver our photos. And as users get more experienced, they're demanding more creative ways to remix, enjoy, and distribute their photos.

We've therefore brought the Picasa software and Picasa Web Albums much closer together, breaking down barriers between your home PC and your online albums. New controls in Picasa 3 make it much easier to quickly upload photos, and we've added a new 'sync to web' feature that automatically updates online albums when you add or edit photos on your computer.

That's just the start. Picasa Web Albums now includes a new 'name tags' feature that helps organize your growing photo collection by people. Opt-in to name tags, and our technology automatically groups photos containing similar faces. Instead of asking you to painstakingly label pictures one-by-one, name tags lets you rapidly tag many photos at once. By doing so, you can easily find that photo of your cousin from two years ago; create a slideshow of you and your best friend, or share an album with everybody who appears in the photos. Take a look at this video to see name tags in action.

There's much, much more. This blog posts only scratches the surface of what's new in Picasa 3 and Picasa Web Albums - an Explore page featuring recent photos from all over the world, the ability to email photos directly to your online albums (great for mobile phones), Creative Commons licensing, and numerous interface refinements. And we haven't event mentioned the compelling new creative tools inside Picasa 3, like a new movie maker, totally-revamped photo collages, a powerful retouching tool, text tool, and more. Check out the video after the post for a complete overview.

We'll be exploring more of what's new in Picasa 3 (beta) on this blog tomorrow. And over the next couple weeks, we'll have daily posts to help introduce you to some of our favorite new features on Picasa Web Albums and inside Picasa 3.

Picasa and Picasa Web Albums are unique in how they work together to make it easier for you to manage your photo collection -- on your computer, or on the web. So get started, have fun, and let us know what you think!

You can help increase your AdSense revenue by incorporating other Google products into your site - Introducing Google Web Elements.

Introducing Google Web Elements : Christine Tsai - Google Web Elements Team said in latest Blog post - Looking for ways to spice up your website with dynamic content? You may know from our optimization tips that you can help increase your AdSense revenue by incorporating other Google products into your site. We're happy to introduce a new, easy way for you to do just that with Google Web Elements.

Web Elements let you easily add richness and interactivity to your site simply by copying and pasting a snippet of code. Inspired by the convenience of embeddable YouTube videos, each Web Element is built upon existing Google products. For example, the Google News element, introduced on this blog earlier this year, dynamically pulls in content from Google News based on news topics you select and displays within an embed on your site. With the official launch of Web Elements, you can choose to include Web Elements from products like Google Custom Search, Calendar, Docs, Friend Connect, and more.
Need more inspiration on how to integrate Web Elements into your site? Here are a few ideas:
If you're using a Custom Search Engine on your site, the Custom Search element can help you integrate search results much more seamlessly with the look and feel of your pages. You can continue to earn revenues from searches while offering a better user experience to your users with better results styling.

Who's using it: The Mayo Clinic uses the Custom Search Element as their main search function. The look and feel of the search results blends in smoothly with the rest of the site.

To enable your visitors to post comments and links on your site, use the Conversation element. The element also lets visitors participate in conversations via Friend Connect.

Who's using it: St. Simons Blog uses the Conversation element to let users in St. Simons Island and Georgia's Golden Isles connect with each other.
