What's a Domain Name?

Simply put a domain name is the address that helps people locate or find you or your company online; it is what you usually type in your browser's address bar to visit a specific website or location on the World Wide Web. Just like in the real world your home or office address helps people locate your residence or your office a domain name or domain address helps people locate you on the www. The more unique the web address or domain name, the easier it is to find. Together, all these domains comprise the world wide web or the Internet.

For example, the Yahoo! domain name is yahoo.com.

A domain name is basically made up of two parts, and as a rule preceded by www. Let us use yahoo.co.in as an example:

The first part, yahoo, is a unique name that represents
the web site.

The second part, co.in, is the extension. There are many
extensions available, though. .com, .co.in, .net, .biz, .info, and .in are more popular in India.
